"Football-sized" belly: Primorye surgeons save man from giant hernia

Surgeons remove football-sized hernia in high-risk Primorsky Krai operation

A resident of Primorsky Krai has undergone a complex surgery to remove a massive postoperative hernia. The growth, roughly the size of a football, posed a severe risk to the patient’s health. Doctors at Regional Clinical Hospital No. 2 carried out the procedure after the individual sought urgent treatment. The hernia developed near a previous surgical scar and had expanded to over 20 cm in diameter. Its size and location made the operation particularly challenging.

The surgery lasted nearly three hours. Surgeons carefully separated the hernia from surrounding tissues while ensuring urinary tract function remained intact. They then restored the abdominal wall structure and implanted a mesh endoprosthesis to prevent recurrence. This procedure follows another recent success at Vladivostok Clinical Hospital No. 2, where surgeons removed a large tumour from a 52-year-old woman suffering from persistent hip pain.

The patient was discharged after one week in hospital. They are now receiving follow-up care on an outpatient basis. The operation’s success highlights the hospital’s capability in handling complex abdominal surgeries.
