Robert Edward Turner III, a pioneering figure in global media, passed away on October 27, 2023, at the age of 84. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on November 19, 1938, he transformed television by launching groundbreaking networks and redefining news coverage. His bold innovations left a lasting mark on journalism and entertainment worldwide. Turner’s media career began in the 1970s when he took over a struggling Atlanta UHF station. By 1976, he had turned it into WTCG, later renamed TBS, using satellite technology to broadcast nationally as a 'superstation'. This move marked the start of his influence on cable television.

In 1977, he stepped away from business briefly to captain the yacht *Courageous* to victory in the America’s Cup. But his biggest impact came in 1980 with the launch of CNN, the first 24-hour news channel. Many industry executives doubted its success, yet CNN soon became a global leader in real-time reporting. The network’s coverage of the 1990-91 Gulf War cemented its reputation, making Turner a household name. Beyond news, he expanded his empire with TNT, Cartoon Network, and Turner Classic Movies (TCM).
