Thane Offers Free Oxygen Concentrators to Ease Chronic Lung Disease Burden

Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has launched a new initiative to support residents battling chronic lung diseases. Free oxygen concentrators will now be available to economically weaker patients, easing both financial strain and hospital pressure. The decision comes as respiratory illnesses rise due to pollution, lifestyle shifts, and lingering post-COVID-19 effects. The proposal was first put forward by Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Prasad Patil. Mayor Sharmila Pipolkar later approved the plan, ensuring its swift implementation. TMC will distribute the concentrators at no cost, targeting those who struggle with medical expenses.

The machines being provided were originally donated to the corporation. Each device has undergone thorough maintenance checks and is now ready for immediate use. By offering home-based oxygen therapy, the initiative helps patients avoid frequent hospital visits. Rising air pollution, changing lifestyles, and complications from past COVID-19 infections have worsened respiratory conditions in Thane. Many patients now require long-term oxygen support, but the cost often proves unaffordable. This scheme aims to bridge that gap by repurposing existing resources.

The free oxygen concentrators will allow eligible patients to manage their treatment at home. This reduces the burden on local healthcare facilities while ensuring continuous care for those in need. The initiative reflects TMC’s effort to address growing respiratory health challenges in the city.
