Project coaches move 3,000 children weekly - Thuringia's Bewegungscoaching gets 12,500 kids moving with sports

A state-funded programme in Thuringia is getting more children active through sports. Known as Bewegungscoaching, it sends trained coaches into schools and daycare centres to work with youngsters. Since its launch in 2022, the initiative has reached thousands of children—and demand continues to grow faster than available spots.

Twelve movement coaches currently work across Thuringia, visiting schools and daycare centres each week. They lead physical activities for children aged five to ten, teaching basic athletic skills alongside teamwork and fair play. Nearly 3,000 youngsters take part in these sessions weekly, with the programme now engaging over 12,500 participants since 2022.

The scheme also supports local sports clubs. By introducing children to organised activities, it has helped clubs recruit more than 1,000 new members. A total of 25 clubs now collaborate with the programme, though many more have applied than the system can accommodate.

Thuringia's government has committed to expanding the initiative. Funding will rise to €500,000 annually for both 2026 and 2027, ensuring the coaches can continue their work across the region.

The Bewegungscoaching programme has already connected thousands of children with sports while boosting club memberships. With increased funding secured, the project will keep growing—but long waiting lists suggest even more clubs want to take part in the coming years.
