Project coaches move 3,000 children weekly - Thuringia's coaching program transforms children's sports participation and skills

Thuringia is expanding its support for children's physical development through a dedicated coaching program. Launched in 2022, the program focuses on children aged five to ten, reaching nearly 3,000 participants each week. Coaches deliver sessions in schools, daycare centres, and local sports clubs, aiming to improve athletic ability and social interaction. Since its start, the initiative has helped clubs recruit over 1,000 new members, with 25 clubs taking part so far.

Demand for the program has consistently exceeded available spots. By 2025, official reports showed that 4,500 children had joined organised sports through the scheme. To sustain its growth, the state has committed €500,000 in funding for both 2026 and 2027.

The coaches emphasise not just physical skills but also values like cooperation and sportsmanship. Their work has become a key part of Thuringia's efforts to keep children active and engaged in sports.

The movement coaching program will continue with increased funding in the coming years. With 4,500 children already joining sports clubs since 2022, the initiative has proven effective in boosting youth participation. The state's investment ensures that more children will have access to structured physical activity and skill development.
