Thuringia's Rural Families Find Lifeline in ThEKiZ Support Network

Families in rural Thuringia often struggle to find local support and services. ThEKiZ, a network of parent-child centres, aims to fill this gap by offering open meeting spaces, low-cost courses, and dedicated counselling. Since July 2023, its Dermbach location has operated as a full centre, providing more professional and tailored assistance to the community.

ThEKiZ centres in Wartburgkreis work together under the state program Solidarity in Family Life. Their goal is to support families across the district with accessible services. As of February 2026, only one centre remains active in Bad Salzungen, with no further openings confirmed.

The organisation focuses on building trust, ensuring help is available during tough times. First-aid courses for children are particularly popular, often free or low-cost to encourage attendance. Other offerings include themed parent evenings and the Strong Parents, Strong Children course.

A standout feature is the toddler group, backed by midwives since September 2025. It provides stability and a sense of community for many families. The Dermbach centre also emphasises early support, networking, and fostering positive childhood experiences.

ThEKiZ continues to address the shortage of family services in rural Thuringia. Through counselling, courses, and community-building, it helps parents and children navigate challenges. The network's low-threshold approach ensures support remains within reach for those who need it most.
