For decades, many have searched for the mythical silver bullet for the dreaded hangover, but it looks like the simplest, spiciest solution has been hiding in plain sight.

The internet is currently obsessed with a hack from TikTok user Danielle (@danileah222), whose pre-drinking ritual involves a humble piece of raw ginger.

She claims that this fiery root stops that "funny tummy" and all the unpleasant vomiting that have sent the video viral, racking up over 4.2 million views in less than a week.

The trick? Eating raw ginger right before you start drinking.

In her video, Danielle - after chewing a chunk of the intensely spicy root - bravely exclaims: "So I'm having a drink tonight, which means ginger."

She chews it before explaining how "spicy" it is, before relieving herself by saying that "at least" she'll have "no hangover tomorrow, no funny timmy, no vomiting."

While no food or trick can completely cure a hangover - that still comes down to time and moderation.

But experts agree that Danielle is absolutely onto something when it comes to combating the dreaded nausea and stomach upset that alcohol brings - but some experts believe it may work at the time of feeling sick, and in this case is a hangover.

The science behind this spicy hack is remarkably robust, according to experts.

Ginger has been used for thousands of years specifically for its powerful anti-nausea properties.

The key lies in the compound gingerol, which is highly concentrated in the fresh, raw root.

According to WebMD, ginger contains chemicals that work directly in the stomach and intestines to reduce nausea and swelling.

These compounds are so effective they may even interact with the brain and nervous system to control feelings of sickness.

Alcohol is notorious for irritating the stomach lining, but ginger can help by stimulating the production of digestive enzymes and speeding up the rate at which your stomach empties its contents.

As your digestive process runs smoother, the typical symptoms of bloating, queasiness, and the urge to vomit are significantly eased.

Danielle's viral video had over 1,600 people rushing to the comments section.

One person asked: "Does this actually work?"

To which Danielle replied: "Works an absolute miracle Gemma."

Then the social media asked: "How much ginger do I actually have to consume lol I hate ginger but I'd rather not have a hangover."

And Danielle replied: "About the same amount I ate... it is very strong what I have liked especially all at once.. but if I was you just get it over with as soon as you swallow it.. it's gone."

Surprising hangover cures

If you've woken up with a groggy head and an aching body from a day or night on the booze, you need to nourish your body to help it regain strength.

Unhealthy, high calorie foods could derail you weight loss efforts as well as make the hangover worse.

Shona Wilkinson, Nutritionist at Dr.Vegan says: "Excessive alcohol consumption damages your liver. To detox your liver and alleviate nasty hangover symptoms such as nausea, headaches, and dehydration, try some of the below ingredients."

Onions and garlic

Both of these foods contain a nutrient called sulphur, according to Shona, which is essential in liver detoxification.

"Toxins in the body essentially join to the sulphur and are then excreted from the body."

Lemon peel

Adding some lemon peel to a glass of water or shaving some onto your food could help alleviate some of your hangover symptoms.

Shona says: "Lemon peel contains a substance called limonene, which helps your body to detoxify itself by removing carcinogens from the body.

"There is research that suggests lemon peel may even offer an effective solution to migraines and headaches, given that it's a great source of Vitamin C."

Grapefruit

It's the substance naringin in grapefruits, which helps to protect the liver from all kinds of damage.

Shona says: "There are a lot of medicines out there that don't mix too well with grapefruit however, so consult your GP before adding too much grapefruit into your diet if you're on any prescribed medications."

Pickle juice

An odd one, but pickle juice is packed with electrolytes like sodium and potassium, which Shona says are essential in a whole host of the body's vital processes.

She says: "Electrolytes help to keep us hydrated by regulating the amount of water in our cells to ensure they're able to function properly.

"If you're hungover, it's the perfect remedy."
