Trump's health under scrutiny after bruises and closed eyes spark debate

Former US President Donald Trump has faced renewed questions about his health after recent public appearances. During live broadcasts of Cabinet meetings, the 79-year-old has been seen with his eyes closed, sparking speculation. The White House has addressed concerns about unexplained bruising on his hands, attributing them to medication and frequent handshakes.

Trump, the oldest US president in history, has often emphasised his mental sharpness. He releases detailed schedules to counter doubts about his age and stamina. In December 2025, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt explained bruises on his right hand as a result of handshakes and aspirin use for cardiovascular prevention.

Medical tests reportedly confirmed his strong heart health, though no specific specialist has been named in connection with the bruising. An unnamed expert also commented on spots on his left hand, telling CNN there were no major concerns. Meanwhile, Trump has dismissed claims he fell asleep during meetings, insisting he was simply bored.

The former president has also stated he sleeps very little. His administration previously broadcast Cabinet meetings live for hours, using them to highlight achievements.

The White House maintains that Trump's health remains robust, despite visible bruising and moments of closed eyes during public events. Medical explanations point to aspirin and handshakes, while Trump continues to reject suggestions of fatigue or age-related decline.
