Tyler Perry donates $1.4M to families hit by SNAP benefit cuts

Filmmaker and philanthropist Tyler Perry has stepped in to help families struggling after cuts to food assistance during the US government shutdown. He donated nearly $1.4 million to several organisations providing meals and support to those affected by reduced SNAP benefits. The funds were split among multiple groups working to ease food insecurity. In Atlanta, recipients included the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Meals on Wheels Atlanta, Caring for Others, All for Lunch, and the Ron Clark Academy. Goodr, an organisation fighting food waste, also received a share of the donation.

A portion of the money went to Baby2Baby, a Los Angeles-based charity that supplies essential items to children in need. Perry highlighted the importance of SNAP benefits, calling them life-changing for working families, elderly people, and children facing hardship.

In a statement, he criticised the lack of compassion in current political discussions. He argued that helping those in need should not be a divisive issue, especially when people are going without basic necessities. Perry's donation will directly assist families who lost access to food aid during the shutdown. The organisations receiving funds will use them to provide meals, groceries, and other essentials to vulnerable groups across the country. His contribution comes at a time when many are still recovering from the financial strain caused by the benefit cuts.
