UK campaign demands ban on deadly non-surgical BBL procedures after near-fatal cases
A campaign is growing to ban dangerous non-surgical Brazilian butt lift (BBL) procedures in the UK. Bonnie-Louise Cooper, who nearly died after undergoing the treatment, is now pushing for stricter laws to regulate the cosmetics industry. MPs have also joined calls for an immediate ban, warning of severe risks linked to unqualified practitioners.
Bonnie-Louise Cooper suffered life-threatening sepsis and now lives with PTSD after receiving a liquid BBL from an unqualified injector. The procedure, often involving hyaluronic acid injections, can block blood flow and cause tissue death if performed incorrectly. Four deaths and 28 serious complications, including embolisms and necrosis, have been recorded in England over the past five years, all in private clinics.
The Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) has urged the government to ban BBLs and introduce a licensing system for non-surgical cosmetic treatments. MPs warn that procedures like Botox and fillers are being carried out in unsafe places, including garden sheds and hotel rooms. Former surgeon Rick Sawyer, who injected Katie Price, was recently banned from cosmetic surgery for three years after operating without proper qualifications.
Cooper supports the MPs' demand that only trained healthcare professionals should perform high-risk procedures. She is calling for fast-tracked legislation to prevent further harm, stressing that current laws leave patients vulnerable to unregulated practitioners.
The push for regulation comes after years of unchecked risks in the UK's cosmetic industry. With documented deaths and severe injuries, campaigners and lawmakers are now demanding urgent action. If implemented, the proposed ban and licensing system would restrict BBLs and similar treatments to qualified medical staff only.
