USV bets big on wellness with ₹1,583-crore acquisition of Wellbeing Nutrition

USV Pvt Ltd, one of India's top pharmaceutical firms, has acquired a 79% stake in Wellbeing Nutrition, a direct-to-consumer (D2C) startup specialising in science-backed consumer energy products. The deal values the company at Rs 1,583 crore and marks USV's push into the fast-growing premium consumer wellness sector. Wellbeing Nutrition, known for its clean-label consumer cellular products, has seen rapid expansion in recent years.

Founded in 1961, USV reported revenues of Rs 5,200 crore in FY25. The company already markets the German skincare brand Sebamed in India and now aims to strengthen its presence in consumer wellness. Managing Director Prashant Tewari called the acquisition a 'future-oriented expansion' that aligns with shifting consumer demand for preventive healthcare.

Wellbeing Nutrition has achieved 120% growth over the past two years and expects to exceed Rs 450 crore in revenue by FY27. Founder Avnish Chhabria stated that the partnership with USV would speed up growth while maintaining the brand's consumer-first approach.

The Indian market for premium consumer energy and preventive health products has expanded significantly since 2022. Government initiatives, such as the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana's launch of eight immunity-boosting nutraceuticals in 2020, have driven demand. Major players like Herbalife, ADM, Abbott, and Amway dominate the sector, with companies investing in new facilities and product lines. For example, Sabinsa Corporation opened an $18 million plant in Karnataka to produce 88 tons of active nutraceutical ingredients annually.

The acquisition positions USV to compete more aggressively in India's booming wellness market. Wellbeing Nutrition's strong growth and focus on science-backed consumer energy products complement USV's strategy to expand beyond traditional pharmaceuticals. The deal also reflects broader industry trends as consumer demand for preventive health solutions continues to rise.
