A new school project in Viersen District is teaching students about healthy eating and sustainability. Called Snack Heroes: Healthy Recipes, Big Impact, the initiative launched in September 2025 at Schwalmtal Community School. Over 13 weeks, ninth-grade students explored nutrition, mental well-being, and sustainable food practices in a hands-on way.
The project was organised by the Healthy Municipality Network of Viersen District, a prevention programme supported by health insurers AOK Rheinland/Hamburg, Barmer, and Techniker Krankenkasse. Running until April 2027, the network focuses on improving youth health across the region.
During the programme, students worked with rescued ingredients to create nutritious snacks for their school cafeteria. They also developed their own cookbook and prepared dishes like a healthy apple crumble. Guests from the district's Waste Management Authority and a food-sharing representative visited to discuss sustainable food habits. Local officials praised the students' efforts. District Administrator Bennet Gielen highlighted their commitment to healthier eating and its positive effect on the school. Mayor Andreas Gisbertz also commended their enthusiasm and the success of their recipes.
The Snack Heroes project marks the first health-focused nutrition initiative of its kind in Viersen District schools. More details about the programme are available at www.gesundekommune-kreis-viersen.de. The Healthy Municipality Network will continue supporting youth health projects in the region until 2027.
