Wegovy's Weight-Loss Injection Gains Ground in Germany—But at a Cost

Wegovy, a prescription weight-loss injection, has been available in Germany since its 2023 approval. The medication supports adults with obesity, particularly those facing cardiovascular risks. However, patients must cover the cost themselves, as statutory health insurance excludes such treatments under current regulations.

Wegovy is delivered as a liquid solution in prefilled, single-use pens. Users inject it under the skin, with recommended sites including the lower stomach (at least two inches from the belly button), upper arm, or front upper thigh. Rotating injection spots each time helps reduce skin reactions.

The manufacturer advises pressing the pen firmly and holding it in place briefly after injection to avoid leakage. Small amounts of leakage do not affect the drug's effectiveness, but persistent issues may indicate a pen fault. In such cases, patients can contact the helpline at 1-833-4-WEGOVY or the manufacturer for support. While availability has improved since its launch, short-term shortages may still arise. Unlike the US, where an oral version became available in late 2025, Germany currently offers only the injectable form. The treatment is designed for long-term use alongside diet and exercise, targeting adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, especially those with liver fibrosis or cardiovascular concerns.

Wegovy remains a private-pay option in Germany, as health insurers do not cover weight-loss medications. Patients using the drug must follow proper injection techniques to minimise leakage and ensure consistent results. The medication continues to play a role in managing obesity-related health risks, though access depends on supply and individual financial circumstances.
