West Suburban Medical Center's abrupt closure leaves Oak Park in crisis

West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park shut its doors abruptly in March 2023. The closure has left nearby residents with fewer healthcare options, forcing many to seek treatment at Loretto Hospital instead. Hospital leaders had initially aimed to reopen by June, but the emergency room remains closed with no confirmed date for restarting services. The sudden closure of West Suburban has placed extra strain on Loretto Hospital, located just two miles away. Patients who once relied on West Suburban now depend on Loretto, increasing wait times and pressure on staff. Dr. Paul Luning, CEO of PCC Community Wellness Center, warned that even a 15-minute delay in emergency care can be critical during a medical crisis.

Meanwhile, the financial troubles of the hospital’s owners have deepened. They currently owe at least £6.8 million in unpaid property taxes for the 2024 and 2025 tax years. A settlement conference held on 29 May 2023 for both West Suburban and Weiss Memorial Hospital failed to produce a reopening timeline. Community leaders have responded with protests. Rev. Ira Acree, pastor of Greater St. John Bible Church, has organised rallies to push for the hospital’s reopening. He argues that healthcare is a civil right and that the closure harms seniors, working families, and all local residents.

The emergency room at West Suburban remains closed, and no reopening date has been set. Loretto Hospital continues to absorb the extra patient load, while unpaid taxes and legal disputes leave the future of West Suburban uncertain. Without a resolution, residents will keep facing longer travel times and delays in urgent medical care.
