Why Your Leg Pain and Visible Spider Veins Demand Medical Attention
Leg pain, swelling, or night-time discomfort are often dismissed as normal signs of ageing. But experts warn these symptoms could signal venous disease—a common but frequently overlooked condition. Many people ignore the warnings, assuming aches and visible spider veins are harmless or just part of getting older.
Dr. Rema Malik, a vascular surgeon, stresses that persistent leg issues should never be normalised. Without proper treatment, underlying problems like chronic venous insufficiency can worsen over time.
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) occurs when valves in leg veins fail, causing blood to pool instead of flowing back to the heart. This leads to symptoms like heaviness, throbbing, and restless legs—often mistaken for stress or magnesium deficiency. Spider veins, medically called telangiectasias, are another red flag, particularly in people aged 30 to 50.
These visible veins are usually fed by larger, damaged reticular veins beneath the skin. While compression socks can ease swelling and discomfort, they do not fix broken valves. Supplements, creams, and over-the-counter remedies also fail to address the root issue: a structural problem requiring medical care.
In Germany alone, CVI affects around 25% of women and 20% of men, with older adults at higher risk. Age, genetics, pregnancy, obesity, and long periods of sitting or standing all increase the likelihood of developing the condition. Ignoring symptoms and treating only the visible veins can be ineffective—or even dangerous—if deeper venous reflux remains untreated.
Dr. Malik advises against self-diagnosis and superficial fixes. Early medical evaluation can prevent complications and improve long-term outcomes for those with venous disease.
Leg discomfort, spider veins, or restless legs may indicate a treatable venous condition rather than an unavoidable part of life. Seeking professional advice ensures proper diagnosis and targeted care. Without intervention, damaged vein valves and blood pooling can lead to ongoing health issues.
