A shawarma kiosk in Yakutsk has been shut down after a severe food poisoning incident left a woman and her child hospitalised. Authorities uncovered shocking sanitary violations during an inspection, leading to an immediate court order to halt operations for 90 days.
The incident began on May 18, 2026, when a woman and her child fell ill after eating shawarma from the street vendor. The child’s condition worsened, requiring five days of hospital treatment—two of which were spent in intensive care.
An investigation by Rospotrebnadzor revealed 21 critical breaches of hygiene standards. Inspectors found the kiosk in a state of extreme neglect, with old stains, dirt on walls and floors, and no evidence of regular disinfection. Raw ingredients were stored without labels or proper documentation, while prepared dishes lacked standardised recipes. The kiosk also failed to implement any quality control or lab testing for its food. A single sink was being used for handwashing, cleaning utensils, and rinsing vegetables, further increasing contamination risks.
The court’s decision suspends the kiosk’s operations for three months. The case highlights the dangers of unchecked food preparation, with the child’s hospitalisation serving as a direct consequence of the violations. Authorities have stressed the need for stricter oversight to prevent similar incidents.
