Georgia restaurants show stark food safety divides in latest inspections
Health inspectors in Georgia have recently released scores for several restaurants, revealing stark contrasts in food safety standards. While some eateries achieved perfect ratings, others faced serious violations during routine checks. One establishment in Lawrenceville received a failing grade after multiple issues were uncovered. Taqueria in Lawrenceville scored just 44 points, earning an 'U' for unsatisfactory in its latest inspection. Raw chicken was found thawing on the prep table for over a day, though the manager insisted it had only been out for two hours. Inspectors also spotted ants crawling on the prep table, cutting board, and inside employee food. A box of sauces stored under a leaking cooler added to the list of violations. After the inspection, the manager confirmed a pest control treatment had been arranged.
Meanwhile, other restaurants in the area performed far better. Mix'd Up Burgers on Boulevard at Memorial Drive in Grant Park earned a perfect 100 on its most recent check. The popular spot, open for nearly 14 years, is known for its Boy That's Good burger—topped with pimento cheese, bacon bits, and fried onions—with part of the sales supporting charity. Lions Restaurant on Buford Highway also improved, scoring 97 points and an 'A' in a follow-up inspection. Over the past year, at least seven Georgia restaurants maintained high standards, earning 'A' grades (90-100). These include Reveille Cafe (100), Heavenly BBQ (100), and Bradley's Bar and Grill (93). Many of these eateries corrected earlier issues by reorganising raw food storage, re-sanitising equipment, and discarding expired items. Coaches Corner, for example, rebounded from an 88 to a 94 after addressing concerns.
The latest inspection results highlight both success stories and ongoing challenges in Georgia's food service industry. Restaurants with perfect scores demonstrate consistent compliance, while others, like Taqueria in Lawrenceville, must address critical violations to regain public trust. Follow-up actions, such as pest control and proper food handling, will determine whether struggling establishments can improve their ratings.
