How long does it take to get to the hospital? - Hesse's healthcare divide: Cities thrive while rural areas struggle for access
Access to hospitals in Hesse varies sharply between cities and rural areas, new data reveals. While nearly all urban residents can reach medical care quickly, those in the countryside often face much longer journeys. The figures come from the latest Hospital Atlas, a tool that maps travel times to different healthcare facilities across the region.
In Hesse's biggest cities, 99% of people can reach a hospital by car in under 15 minutes. For maternity wards, the coverage is just as strong, with 99% of women in major urban areas having quick access. Paediatric emergency care is also widely available—86% of city residents can get there within a quarter of an hour.
Mid-sized towns follow closely, with 94% of residents within a 15-minute drive of a hospital. Even in larger small towns, 88% can reach medical help just as fast. But the picture changes in rural areas. There, only 64% can get to a hospital in 15 minutes, and just 27% of women have quick access to maternity services. For children's emergencies, the gap is even wider: only 8% of rural residents can reach a paediatric emergency department within the same time. The Hospital Atlas lets users check travel times for different medical services. It also shows a worrying trend for stroke care. Over the past five years, average travel times to stroke units have risen from 25 minutes in 2021 to 28 minutes in 2025. Official reports blame growing traffic and shifts in rural populations for the delay.
The data highlights a clear divide in healthcare access across Hesse. Urban residents benefit from fast hospital reach, while rural communities often face longer travel times. With stroke care delays also increasing, the Hospital Atlas provides a tool for residents to check their nearest medical services.
