Car safety systems have long relied on crash test dummies modelled after the 'average male', leaving women at higher risk in collisions. Research shows that female occupants face a 1.6 times greater chance of injury than men when both sexes share a vehicle. The discrepancy stems from outdated testing methods that fail to account for key differences in anatomy and seating positions.
Current female crash test dummies are simply scaled-down versions of male models. They do not accurately reflect differences in pelvic width, chest circumference, or shoulder shape. As a result, injuries to women—particularly in the chest, spine, arms, and legs—are more frequent and severe than in men, even at the same collision speeds.
The problem worsens with age. Women over 50 sustain more serious injuries in crashes than men of the same age group. Airbags and seatbelts, designed for standardised seating positions, often fail to protect occupants in reclined or rearward-set postures, which are common in real-world driving. Experts at TU Graz argue for a shift in safety testing. They propose intelligent vehicle systems that adjust restraints—such as airbags and seatbelts—based on the occupant’s size, posture, and other characteristics. This approach would move beyond the one-size-fits-all model that currently dominates safety standards.
The reliance on male-centric crash test dummies underestimates injury risks for women. Without changes to testing procedures, safety systems will continue to leave female occupants more vulnerable. Advances in adaptive restraint technology could help address these gaps, but broader reforms in crash testing standards are needed to reflect real-world diversity.
